Investment scams trick people into putting their money into fake or non-existent ventures. Scammers often promise high returns with little risk. They might use technical jargon, impressive websites or official-looking documents to appear legitimate. Typically, they'll put pressure on you to make a quick decision. The money paid by later investors used to provide returns to earlier ones. Another tactic is the 'pump and dump' scheme.
